Prayers:

Your child should know:

  • Prayer is talking and listening to God
  • Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Meal Prayer, Act of Contrition, Sign of the Cross.
  • Should be aware of Nicene Creed, Apostle Creed

5 types of Prayer are:

  1. Adoration – when we tell God that we love Him
  2. Petition – when we ask God to help us
  3. Intercession- when we ask God to help someone else
  4. Thanksgiving- when we thank God for the gifts he has given us
  5. Praise- when we tell God that he is great and wonderful

  • What is a Sacrament? It is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
  • There are Seven Sacraments: Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick
  • Sacraments of Initiation are: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist
  • Sacraments of Healing are: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick
  • Sacraments of Service are: Matrimony and Holy Orders

Liturgical year

Your child show know:

The Liturgical year begins on the 1st Sunday of Advent

Advent – when we prepare to celebrate Christ’s coming at Christmas

Lent – when we prepare to celebrate Jesus rising from the dead on Easter

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.

Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the days we call the Easter Triduum.

Easter is the day of Jesus’ resurrection (He rose from the dead)

Your child should know:

  1. I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me.

  5. You shall not kill
  6. You shall not commit adultery

Your child should know:

They are the teachings given to us by Jesus for true happiness

There are eight beatitudes

  1. Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven
  2. Blessed are they who mourn; for they will be comforted
  3. Blessed are the meek; for they will inherit the land
  4. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they will be satisfied
  5. Blessed are the merciful; for they will see God
  6. Blessed are the clean of heart; for they will see God
  7. Blessed are the peacemakers; for they will be called children of God
  8. Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness; for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

Vocabulary

Your child should know:

Faith – It is a virtue by which we believe and accept all that God teaches and reveals to us.

Conscience – The ability we have to decide whether a word, thought or deed is right or wrong

Mortal Sin – It is an act or deep –freely chosen-so grave it breaks our relationship with God

Divine Revelation – God making himself known to us

Kingdom of God – term used by Jesus to describe the power of God’s love active in our world

Real Presence of Jesus- Jesus’ unique and real presence in the Eucharist under the appearance of bread and wine.

Eucharist – The Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, who is truly present under the appearance of bread and wine.

Eucharist fast – It is abstaining from food or drink one hour before receiving Holy Communion.

There are two parts to the Mass:  Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist
